The Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U is an entry level LCD HDTV. Supporting 1080p content, it’s capable of displaying the highest quality video out there, unfortunately this 46-inch HDTVs performance was less than impressive. The price may be attractive to many, however, as it can be had for as little as $1300.
The Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U is not a particularly attractive TV. In fact, many will find it downright unattractive. Add to this one of the worst remotes we’ve ever seen and you probably won’t be showing off the Aquos LC-46D64U to your friends. The menu system is simple and straightforward, but like everything else on the TV, it lacks any element of style.
If you do purchase the Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U we recommend you also invest in a surround sound system. The built-in speakers are amongst the worst we’ve seen in an HDTV. We were happier with the connectivity options, which includes three HDMI ports – reasonable for a TV in this price range – and all the additional standard ports you could want. Many of the ports are easily accessible just around the right side of the TV.
The Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U did a decent job with blacks and whites, but we found there were problems with the greys in between. We also noticed significant problems upscaling lower quality content. This will impact you if you want to watch DVDs or standard definition television on this HDTV. Colors were a mixed bag, with some inaccuracies that could cause problems.
Motion was another weak spot for the Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U. High speed scenes with lots of moving parts can seem jerky. The viewing angle was also below average. Once you get only 21 degrees from the center line the contrast ratio will drop below 50%, which can cause scenes to look washed out. This is only an issue if you watch TV from various angles, but for those with large families or who want to host a lot of people the viewing angle won’t be good enough.
Although the price is right on the Sharp Aquos LC-46D64U, the performance is not. Frankly, consumers have a lot of choices at this price point and we recommend you look at better performing competitors like the VIZIO VO47L instead.
