Samsung UN46B6000 LCD HDTV Review

The Samsung UN46B6000 is a 46-inch LCD HDTV whose main feature is the fat that it is just 1.2-inches thick. This svelte profile is made possible by the use of of LED lights, which need less room than the more common CCFL backlights. The UN46B6000 sports a simple and elegant design, with a black finish that has red highlights. The thin form factor and LED backlights do come at a premium, as the Samsung UN46B6000 has a suggested retail price of $2,800, although you can find it for as little as $2,100.

The Samsung UN46B6000's ports are arranged in a reverse L format on the back of the television, with some pointing downwards and some pointing out to the left side of the HDTV. The selection of ports is weighted heavily towards more modern connections with four HDMI ports, 2 USB ports and a LAN port for connecting to the Internet and home networks. There's only a single component input, which also does double duty as a composite video input, and no S-video input. This means that if you have a lot of devices that require older connections the UN46B6000 might not be a good pick for you as you can only connect one of them. One of the UN46B6000's signature features is the ability to play music, video and photos from USB devices or over the network. You can also access internet content via a Yahoo widgets system, although the selection is limited.

The Samsung UN46B6000's remote has a glossy finish and large, easy to press buttons. Unfortunately Samsung has made a questionable design decision in adding a curved wing that juts out of the bottom which can make the remote awkward to hold. The menu system is simple and easy to use, although it could be a bit more responsive. We were happy with the extensive selection of picture controls on this display, but unfortunately the audio from the built-in speakers was not very impressive as it was flat and tinny. If you care about audio quality we recommend you invest in a separate set of speakers.

Performance (Read the full lab performance results at Televisioninfo.com)

The Samsung UN46B6000 did a good job offering deep blacks and bright whites. These combine to produce a very wide contrast ratio, , and we were also mostly happy with the color performance from the television. There was no undue blue or yellow tinge to the whites on screen and the red, blue and green performance, which are the three primary colors a television combines to create every other color, were also accurate. There was a problem with the color gamut, which results in some colors looking a little inaccurate, although to be fair most HDTVs have trouble in this area.

The Samsung UN46B6000's motion performance was a mixed bag. The 120Hz processing of this television did a good job reducing motion blur, but we also noticed some obvious motion artifacts such as a rolling shutter effect that gave video a slightly jerky, unnatural look. The Samsung UN46B6000's viewing angle was small, which shouldn't be a problem if you sit directly in front of the television, but it will look pale if you try to view it from more oblique angles. We also noticed that the screen was very reflective, so you need to be careful where you place lights in the room.

Comparisons (Read more in-depth comparisons at Televisioninfo.com)

Overall the Samsung UN46B6000 offers above average picture quality in a thin and attractive package. Anyone who purchases this HDTV will likely be happy with the performance. Unfortunately the price is going to be a barrier for many people. With the UN46B6000 you're paying for the thin form factor and LED backlights, which don't really produce any improvements in performance. The result is that instead of paying between $2,100 and $2,800 for this television you could buy a Samsung PN50A760 for about $2,000, which would give you a larger 50-inch television and better picture quality to boot. Alternatively you could pay at least $600 less for Samsung's LN46B650, which provides almost the exact same quality but lacks the LED backlights and is a bit thicker. The result is that although the Samsung UN46B6000 is a good television, it's not a good value at this point.
