Pioneer SE-A1000 Headphones Review

The Pioneer SE-A1000 headphones are an on-ear option intended for use in home theater setups. In this regard, we found the A1000s to be a good option, if a bit pricey at $199.99. The cord is 6 meters long (just shy of 20 feet), so it can easily stretch clear across most living rooms. The cord is wrapped with woven fibers, which is great since things that lie strewn about the floor have a tendency to get stepped on, have computer chairs roll over them, or await similar hazards. The headphones end in a 1/8-inch (3.5 mm) plug, but there's also a 1/4-inch adapter included.

The audio quality is good overall. The A1000s don't have any issues with emphasizing one frequency dramatically more than another, or with one ear cup playing louder than the other. The headphones do have some distortion toward the lower frequencies, which you might want to keep in mind if you like bass-heavy music. Beyond that, however, its distortion results were good. These headphones don't isolate the user well, however. The A1000s only block out a minor amount of higher-pitched sounds, meaning a lot of outside noise will end up contributing to your music. Also, they don't seal in sound well, meaning those around you could probably make out what you're listening to. Of course, since these headphones are meant for watching DVDs on a home setup, neither of these areas should provide an issue.

Overall, we think the Pioneer SE-A1000s are good, but their $200 price tag is a little more than we'd expect to see for what they offer. They do have an interesting look to them, however, which typically does bump up the price slightly. If you're looking for headphones that won't wake up your significant other while you watch a midnight monster movie marathon, then the A1000s probably aren't for you (depending on how sound a sleeper he or she is). If you're not looking for perfect sound or perfect quiet, however, the A1000s are very comfortable, and are definitely worth considering.
