The LG 37LH55 is in the middle of LG's LCD television lineup. This 37-inch HDTV retails for just over $1000 and sports a glossy black bezel that will blend into your decor. There's also a small protrusion at the bottom right that holds a glowing LED light to indicate power status and adds a bit of style to the design.
The 37LH55 offers four HDMI ports for connecting to modern A/V device. There are also two Component video inputs and two composite video inputs as well as an optical audio out. The television also features a USB port, that can be used to view photos or listen to music from a connected USB mass storage device. The television sports a full 1080p resolution, meaning it can natively handle the highest quality of HD content.
The LG 37LH55's remote control is long and skinny, with a good layout of buttons. Unfortunately it doesn't feel particularly well built, and we don't like the faux leather texturing added to the plastic. Audio quality from the built in speakers were average, with audio coming out clear but a bit flat. Turning on the simulated surround sound feature does add a bit more depth and bass to the audio, but it's still nowhere near as good as a dedicated set of surround sound speakers. The menu interface is simple and intuitive, with a nice selection of picture options.
Performance (Read the full lab performance results at Televisioninfo.com)
The television's black level was unimpressive, meaning you will lose detail in darker areas of scenes. The display can get plenty bright, but the poor black level leads to a pedestrian contrast ratio of 1156:1. Color performance was good, with only small variations in color temperature that that might lead to a very slight yellow or blue cast to the screen. Color accuracy was reasonable, with good adherence to the standard color gamut so colors will look the way they are supposed to.
One of the 37LH55's most important features is the 240Hz refresh rate, which should significantly improve motion performance. In our motion tests we did see significantly less motion blur than in televisions with the standard 60Hz refresh rate, but it isn't up to the level of other televisions with 240Hz refresh rate.
Comparisons (Read more in-depth comparisons at Televisioninfo.com)
The LG 37LH55 offers some nice high-end features at a relatively reasonable price. We were happy with it's motion performance and color accuracy. Unfortunately the poor black level and correspondingly poor contrast ratio are significant drawbacks. For about the same price you can pick up a Samsung LN40B650 that is both larger and offers a much better contrast ratio. The 387LH55 is a good television, but better values can be had at it's price point.
