LG 37LH30 LCD HDTV Review

The LG 37LH30 is an entry-level 37-inch LCD television that offers a full 1080p resolution and has 3 HDMI ports for connectivity. It does lack some higher-end features, however, such as increased refresh rates for improved motion and internet connectivity features. The television's suggested retail price is $900, but it can be found for around $800 at retailers.

The 37LH30's design is not ground breaking. The bezel is a glossy black plastic, and its power indicator will pulse gently as the the TV powers on. If you're looking for a TV to blend into your room, the 37LH30's understated look is unlikely to ruffle any feathers.

The 37LH30 keeps its ports close to the edge, which makes them easy to reach. There's also a few ports on the TV's side. In addition, the TV swivels on its stand. If you've ever bumped your knuckles raw trying to plug something in, you'll appreciate the 37LH30's port placement.

The menu system on the 37LH30 is simple and intuitive. If you've used another LG TV in the past, it'll be immediately familiar to you. The only confusing aspect is the lack of descriptions for the video processing features. Most of them don't have intuitive names or obvious functionality.

The LG 37LH30's black level was unimpressive. This contributed to a poor contrast ratio, despite a reasonable brightness level. What this means is that dark areas of the screen will lack the detail you can get form a television with a better black level. On the plus side, we noticed the screen was very uniform. There was some brightening or shadowing at the corners and along the sides, but otherwise the screen was very evenly lit.

The TV did better with colors than it did with black level. It had an even color temperature, meaning there won't be a color cast to your image. Color accuracy was also better than average.

We found the 37LH30 was prone to blurring and artifacting during motion. Artifacts are things that appear on the screen that should not be there. For example on the 37LH30 fine patterns will flash or shudder when moving, which can be a distracting eyesore. The TV also had a very narrow viewing angle. Viewing it from an angle other than straight on will result in a lower contrast ratio.

The 37LH30 does offer some nice features at a reasonable price, in particular the 1080p resolution and good color performance. Unfortunately it also fails to impress in many areas, and in general you can likely find a better value at this price point, and even below. For example, if you're willing to step down to a 37-inch television both the LG 32LH20 and the Samsung LN32B360 offer significantly better performance for less money.
