We liked the styling of lesser priced competitors like the Sony BRAVIA KDL-46W4100 better, but you won’t be embarrassed to have this TV in your living room.
The JVC Procision LT-47X899 has a pretty reasonable selection of inputs and outputs. However, we would have liked to see more than just three HDMI ports on a TV at this price. There is a USB port on board for connecting digital cameras so you can view photos on the display.
We were not particularly impressed by the JVC Procision LT-47X899’s speakers. They are just about average for an HDTV, but won’t be as good as even an inexpensive surround sound setup. The menu system on the TV is complicated, with a lot of sub-menus, so be ready to yank out the manual to figure your way around. The remote was not good. We found it overly large, not well constructed and lacking in ergonomics. The buttons are well labeled, however.
The JVC Procision LT-47X899 performed reasonably in our tests of blacks and whites. Blacks were deep and whites were bright, which is what we like to see. That said, it did not perform nearly as well as the Samsung LN46A750 (another LCD display) or Plasma televisions, which tend to have very deep blacks. Color performance was good with the exception of greens, which showed some inaccuracy.
We were quite happy with the motion performance of the JVC Procision LT-47X899; it handled even jerky and high speed scenes smoothly and without major problems. The viewing angle was not as good, unfortunately. We found that the contrast ratio fell below 50% at just 18 degrees from center. We expect a decent LCD HDTV to be good out to around 50 degrees.
The JVC Procision LT-47X899 is a TV with some decent features, but we found that we could get performance as good as and better from other HDTVs like the Samsung LN46A750 or Sony BRAVIA KDL-46W4100 for hundreds of dollars less. Given the high price tag we’d expect this TV to stand above those competitors, it does not.
